In the early stage of my career, I worked really hard (sometimes 20 hours a day). I clearly remember the days of sitting in front of the computer, in the tool lab, debugging that large mission-critical system. I also remember those nightmares of stack overflow causes M$ tool falling into well and needing to be fished. Almost 6 years, day in and day out. Many colleagues together on the journey, came and left. One day during a farewell party of a colleague, who has worked with me closely for a few years deploying our system to the field locations and who was about to be transferred back to field location, he said to me: “Do not forget to smell the roses along the way”! It got me.
Life is a journey. There are multiple ways to live through it, and we can only live it once. It is so easy to get caught up on something which becomes your whole life, and the moment you realize that there are more to it, it might be too late.
When I look back my journey so far,
…there were many people that I would love to have spent more time with and to know them better…
…there were many occasions that I would love to have taken the time to experience and appreciate more…
…there were many places that I would love to have visited and widen my perspective…
I did not because I get caught up on a tunnel view of my road and forgot to smell those roses along the way…
Oh well, lucky for me, it is not too late (and never too late). The way ahead is still full of roses 🌹🌹🌹, so I will make sure I smell and appreciate them along the way! Will you?
