The Power of Reflection

In today’s fast moving society full of social media blasts, it is getting harder and harder to have some quiet time, do nothing and just reflect. Luckily, I have had the luxury to do a lot of that recently as I do have plenty of quiet time…😋 I realized how powerful this small but intentional effort could be, it makes me

Appreciate more…

Often times we go through what we experienced so quickly that we barely had quality time to really experience and appreciate them. In my reflection, I have recalled so many people I met – that colleague who I had fun working with, that leader gave me inspiration of work, that team member made me so proud to have, that friend who lend a hand when I needed help, that family who is always there for me… and all those moments and experiences with them, that tough project we struggled and suffered but successfully turned around, that mission worth countless days and nights to pursue, that reward given because you know you have played a key role, that exhausting but hopeful moment because you know somebody gets your back, that food we cook together, that drink we enjoyed together and that place we travel together… So many more and I am overwhelmed by how lucky I am to have all these. What more can you ask for in life?

See clearer…

There is a saying, “the spectators see the chess game better than the players”. Reflection helps you to switch your role from player to spectator in the game. There are countless times that I feel stuck/trapped in a situation and do not really know what’s going on and how to get out of it… In reflection, it is so clear a simple (not necessarily easy) move can change the situation completely. That simple move can be changing the perspective of seeing the situation, can be taking up the responsibility that I have been denying to take because of pride or fear, can be calling for help that is always there waiting…If only we pause and reflect at that moment!

Do better…

Reflection gives you this pause in life to look back and distill some lessons, so that you may take better actions to create a better future. I have seen so many people (myself included) get caught up in this insane race of life, so busy doing something and “have no time to think” (I heard this a lot). As a result, to-do list overflows, body exhausted, emotion intensify, things get worse and worse until you break. This vicious circle is exactly what you want to get out of by taking a pause and reflect, then adjust. That has to be a conscious act, simple but not easy, however worthwhile…because it helps you to do better!

Life is a journey of constantly pushing to get a better version of ourselves, and reflection gives a great boost for this journey. It does not have to take a lot of time, just do it, and do it now!
